The USS Detroit moored outside the historic general motors building in downtown Detroit October 22, 2016. Detroit is the sixth ship to carry the city’s name and the fourth Freedom-class littoral combat ship to be commissioned. Littoral combat ships give the U.S. Navy a fast, agile, mission-focused platform designed to operate in near-shore environments, while capable of open-ocean tasking. They are highly maneuverable and designed to win against 21st-century coastal threats such as submarines, mines, and swarming small craft.
