Tsuchiya Naoka demonstrates the proper tea steeping technique during a green tea seminar Nov. 22 on Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan. Marine Corps Community Services hosted the class to teach Status of Forces Agreement members the historical background, health benefits and proper preparation of Japanese green tea, which is also called matcha. Naoka, a certified tea specialist who led the class, carefully demonstrated importance of paying close attention to the temperature of the water used to steep the tea leaves. According to Naoka, the temperature of the water used determines the health benefits the consumer will receive from the tea, as certain nutrients extract at different temperatures. After Naoka’s demonstration, the students practiced steeping their own tea leaves and serving the beverage to each other. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Janessa K. Pon)
