Christi Shirley, 19 of Pell City, encourages 12-year-old Davante Rogers of Fultondale to give up the fight during an impromptu sumo wrestling match July 17, in Springville, Ala. The sumo wrestling suits were a part of a recruiting event held at the newly remodeled Alabama Army National Guard Springville armory. Local Army Guard recruiter, Staff Sgt. Sheyra Rogers, generated the event in an effort to inform the community about the Guard and about the opening of the new army which houses the Alabama Guard’s 208th Chemical Company. Rogers says she wants the community to know that the even though the armory’s doors haven’t officially opened, she is still recruiting for the unit which just returned home from an overseas deployment. The armory’s official grand opening is slated for later in September.
