A recruit from Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, prepares a recruit for his fight before entering the pugil sticks ring at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Jan. 18. Recruits were given protective gear, which included a helmet, groin protector, and flak jacket and pugil stick that simulated a rifle. Annually, more than 17,000 males recruited from the Western Recruiting Region are trained at MCRD San Diego. Mike Company is scheduled to graduate March 31.
