American dignitaries and miltary leaders honor the U.S. flag as the national anthem plays before the United States Forces-Iraq change-of-command ceremony, Sept. 1. Gen Lloyd J. Austin III relieved Gen. Ray Odierno as the commander of USF-I on the same day that marked the beginning of Operation New Dawn and the official transition to stability operations. Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen, attended the ceremony at Al Faw palace to welcome Austin to his new post.
