Pfc. Kyle Ruth, 26, a combat engineer from Santa Maria, Calif., uses a pick axe to break through a mud wall at a small combat outpost in Musa Qal’eh, Nov. 3. Many of the compound’s mud walls were replaced by Hesco barriers –large squares filled with dirt and rocks. Engineers with 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division (Forward), were tasked with fortifying defensive positions manned by 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment.
