170519-N-WZ681-082 WATERS SOUTH OF JAPAN (May 19, 2017) The Navy's forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), conducts a live-fire exercise of the ship’s Phalanx Close-In Weapons system (CIWS). CIWS combines a 20 mm Gatling gun with search-and-tracking radar to provide surface ships with terminal defense against anti-ship missiles. Ronald Reagan, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 5, provides a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interests of its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
