Cpl. Ryder Sartor, a surveyor with 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, verifies a survey control point with the use of a position navigation unit while surveying the range prior to annual artillery training here Feb. 1. Surveyors arrive up to three days in advance to conduct reconnaissance of the area and establish the direction of fire. 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines is conducting live-fire artillery training to maintain operational readiness of the artillery battalion in support of the U.S. – Japan security alliance.
