U.S. Marines and members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force set up an M252 81mm medium weight mortar system in a light armored vehicle Aug. 13, 2017, in Chitose, Japan, in support of Northern Viper 2017. Marines with 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion spent the day sharing techniques with the members of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force. Northern Viper maintains and strengthens the United States’ influence in the region and the U.S.-Japan Alliance. 3rd LAR is a battalion from North Carolina attached to Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division through the unit deployment program.
