Cpl. Colby Brode takes a break during an intermission of mortar fires Aug. 13, 2017, in Chitose, Japan, in support of Northern Viper 2017. Marines with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment spent the day sharing techniques with the members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. Northern Viper maintains and strengthens the United States’ influence in the region and the U.S.-Japan Alliance. Brode, a Parkersburg, West Virginia native, is a squad leader with 1/3.
