Lance Cpl. Patrick Caldwell is a team leader for the machine gun squad in Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, supporting Northern Viper, Aug. 11-28, 2017. During the exercise, he guards the command post and allows vehicles to enter and depart after getting proper authority. Northern Viper is a combined-joint exercise held to enhance regional cooperation between participating nations to collectively deter security threats. “I spent 7-dollars on a phone app to be able to get over the language barrier with my counterparts,” said Caldwell, a Simi Valley, California native. “We have a similar sense of humor, so it’s a good reminder that they’re just like us.” (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt.
