A mother black bear lies sleeping in her den, March 8, as Brian Dirks, Camp Ripley Environmental Team, approaches to tranquillize her so the team can perform various tests and observations of her health. Annually, members of the Camp Ripley Environmental Team perform these den visits to gain insight on the health and well-being of the black bear to assist in the advancement of medical research and other scientific advancements.
