SAN DIEGO (Sept. 15, 2017) USS Makin Island (LHD 8) Commanding Officer Capt. Mark A. Melson delivers remarks during the chief petty officer pinning ceremony at Liberty Station, formerly known as Naval Training Center San Diego. Twenty-seven Sailors were promoted to chief petty officer during the ceremony. Makin Island is currently in dry dock at General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) for a depot-level maintenance availability.
