GROTON, Conn. – Yeoman Second Class David Baxter maneuvers his bandit tool and cutter to complete half of a patch as Fireman Recruit Anthony Lewis-Brannan holds the banding buckle. Sailors learn to patch low pressure leaks with oiled marlin and high pressure leaks with strongbacks and chain wrenches during the Dry Lab section of Damage Control Training at Naval Submarine School. Flooding in a submarine can be more dangerous for a crew than in a surface ship. The Damage Control trainer simulates the general arrangement of a forward lower level submarine engine room and during casualties Sailors must apply classroom learning to stop the leaks and save their ship.
