    U.S. Navy

Maureen Murphy, mother of Lt. Michael P. Murphy (SEAL) and ship's sponsor, welds a steel box filled with mementos of her son to the mast of the guided-missile destroyer Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Michael Murphy (DDG 112), during a mast stepping ceremony at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. The stepping of the ship's mast is a Navy tradition in which a coin is placed at the base of a ship's mast to bring good luck and safe voyages for a vessel. The pieces will remain sealed in the ship’s super structure until decommissioning.
