Retired Marine Cpl. Samuel “Lee” Anderson, a former member of 5th Marine Division, poses with a flag atop Mount Suribachi while recounting to his sons what he did on the island March 24, 2018 on Iwo To, Japan. Anderson, who fought for 21 days on the island until a landmine, set off by another Marine, knocked him unconscious, returned to the island to participate in the 73rd Reunion of Honor. The ceremony is an opportunity to remember the veterans who fought for their respective countries on this hallowed ground; their battle has inspired future generations to value and maintain peace, security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond. Anderson is a native of Venice, California. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Jamin M. Powell)
