Nikki Ange, an environmental scientist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Norfolk District, reviews photos taken by Garrett Wickham, an environmental protection specialist from Portland District, as she prepares a sketch of a tornado-damaged property. This type of assessment, conducted before debris removal operations, identify the types and extent of debris, potential hazards, and vegetation and structures on the property. To date, USACE contractors have removed more than 1.15 million cubic yards of debris from public rights-of-way and private property damaged or destroyed by the EF-5 tornado that struck the city May 22.
