Nikki Ange, an environmental scientist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Norfolk District, assesses a property affected by the EF-5 tornado that damaged or destroyed almost a third of the city May 22. Ange, a native of Chesapeake, Va. is one of more than 300 USACE employees who volunteered to support the federal recovery efforts here. To date, USACE contractors have removed more than 1.15 million cubic yards of debris from public rights-of-way and private property, including more than 2,800 tree stumps and other vegetative debris.
