Baton Rouge, Louisiana, May 9, 2018 – National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) WC-130J aircraft nicknamed "Hercules" at the Hurricane Awareness Tour (HAT) stop at the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport. This plane is used in weather reconnaissance missions and is built to enter storms and hurricanes to obtain data on the movement, size, and intensity of the storm systems. The HAT, hosted by NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS), has been conducted for over 35 years and is a vital part of the annual campaign to raise public awareness and preparation for the approaching hurricane season.
