Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, May 17, 2018 - After the impact of Hurricane María the rainforest has been partially opened, which has allowed tourists, as well as local visitors, to begin enjoying access to the roads, trails and rivers of this unique and important ecosystem. The arrival of the Hurricane caused significant damage which required a long term emergency response, closing of the forest and an overall adjustment. Immediate response was facilitated by FEMA to allow access for equipment in order to make repairs and fuel generators that kept critical communications operational during the island response and recovery efforts. Prior to the hurricane, over 1 million people annually would visit El Yunque Rainforest, which integrates ecological, social and economic sustainability.FEMA/Eduardo Martinez
