Soldiers from Task Force Gridley, 1249th Engineer Battalion, Oregon Army National Guard, and Task Force Sword, 18th Engineer Brigade, based out of Germany, line up to begin the first leg of the Hood to Coast Satellite Run held on Forward Operating Base Sharana in Paktika province, Afghanistan. The race was held from Aug. 26-28. Participating runners in the 3-day relay race included National Guard soldiers from Oregon and Nebraska, as well as engineers from the 18th Engineer Brigade and civilian contractors. The race spans a course of 197 miles, divided into legs of varying distances and runners, and has been a deployed Oregon Army National Guard tradition to run in conjunction with the original Hood to Coast relay held in Oregon.
