California Cadet Corps Cadet Staff Sgt. Joshua Platon, a student at Del Vallejo Middle School in San Bernardino, California, is questioned about his ribbons and decorations by high school cadets during the corps' annual Individual Major Awards statewide competition, May 12, 2018, at Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, California. Cadets of similar age and experience competed against one another in a military board; they were scored by a panel of judges based on their cadet knowledge, military bearing, and an essay presentation. Cadets advanced to the state competition after winning previous competitions at their school and brigade. The California Cadet Corps is a youth program for middle and high schools that falls under the banner of the California Military Department's Youth and Community Programs Task Force.
