NIJMEGEN, Netherlands (Sept. 20, 2018) William J. Holt, a Dutch national, points to the name of a distant relative who died while taking the Waal River Bridge from Nazi control on September 20, 1944. The memorial recognizes the 48 U.S. Soldiers who died in the waters beneath the bridge while securing it for the Allied invasion of Europe and the subsequent liberation of the Netherlands.
