NIJMEGEN, Netherlands (Sept. 20, 2018) Col. Vincent Martinelli, U.S. Army attaché to the Netherlands, raises the American flag at the Waal River Memorial Bridge during the 74th commemoration of the Allied Invasion of the Netherlands. The memorial recognizes the 48 U.S. Soldiers who died in the waters beneath the historic Waal River Bridge on September 20, 1944 while securing it from Nazi control during the Allied invasion of Europe and the subsequent liberation of the Netherlands.
