NIJMEGEN, Netherlands (Sept. 20, 2018) William J. Holt, a Dutch national, shows Soldiers attached to 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, the historic Waal River Bridge after a ceremony at the Waal River Bridge Memorial commemorating the Soldiers who died there during World War II. The memorial recognizes the 48 U.S. Soldiers who died in the waters beneath the historic Waal River Bridge on September 20, 1944 while securing it from Nazi control during the Allied invasion of Europe and the subsequent liberation of the Netherlands.
