Lance Cpl. Blaine Stephens, a field radio operator with Company F, Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, serves chow in the wardroom aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), underway in the South China Sea, Oct. 9, 2018. Stephens, a native of Chico, California, graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in June 2013; he enlisted June 2017. A variety of Marines within the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit get temporary additional duties while aboard the Wasp; such as, mess deck, combat cargo, and disposal technicians. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide-range of military operations in the Indo-Pacific region.
