Lance Cpl. Juan Montero, a flight equipment technician with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262 (Reinforced), serves chow in the wardroom aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), underway in the South China Sea, Oct. 9, 2018. Montero, a native of Bakersfield, California, graduated from South High School in May 2015; he enlisted September 2016. A variety of Marines within the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit get temporary additional duties while aboard the Wasp; such as, mess deck, combat cargo, and waste disposal technicians. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide-range of military operations in the Indo-Pacific region.
