A soldier and an airmen from the California National Guard conduct search and rescue training in a rubble pile caused by a mock improvised nuclear device detonation in the 2011 Arizona Statewide/Vigilant Guard Exercise held in Phoenix, Nov. 3-5. The exercise is designed to enhance the California National Guard’s disaster response capabilities. Vigilant Guard is preparing the 49th Military Police Brigade to assume the role as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region IX military disaster coordinator, or Homeland Response Force asset.
