SOUTH CHINA SEA (Nov. 15, 2018) – Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Alma Gallegos, left, and Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Kjae Robinson, right, assigned to the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39), operate MK 38 weapons systems during the 24th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercises in the South China Sea, Nov. 15. CARAT is a joint exercise between the U.S. Navy and the Royal Brunei Navy in an effort to promote theatre security cooperation in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility. Land, one of only two U.S. Navy submarine tenders homeported in Apra Harbor, Guam, provides maintenance, hotel services and logistical support to submarines and surface ships in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operation.
