Reserve Capt. Jose DaCunha (center), commander, Company A, 1st Battalion, talks to his first sergeant, 1st Sgt. James Payton, during an awards ceremony for some of DaCunha’s wounded warriors. DaCunha, who in civilian life is a lawyer, loves his assignment so much that he has repeatedly requested extensions. The Harvard Law School graduate extended his active duty requirement because taking care of his soldiers means more to him than the six-figure salary he was earning as a civilian lawyer with the Department of Labor. Janice Johnson, both a WTB employee and mother of an Company A soldier, is thankful that her son’s care is in the hands of DaCunha and his dedicated team of squad leaders, platoon sergeants and nurse case managers.
