Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Lt. Gen. Thomas D. Waldhauser, the commanding general of 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, applaud during a Navy Cross presentation honoring the family of Lance Cpl. Donald J. Hogan here, Jan. 17. Hogan sacrificed his life to save his fellow Marines in Helmand province, Afghanistan, Aug. 26, 2009. The San Clemente native served in Afghanistan as an infantryman with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. His father Jim, mother Carla and sister Adrianna received the award on his behalf.
