The Regimental Combat Team 6 Marine of the day is Cpl. Dustin Colwell, 26, field mess non-commissioned officer, from Lawrenceville, Ga. Colwell joined the Marine Corps in December 2008.
Colwell joined the Marine Corps because he wanted to change his lifestyle. He also wanted the stability that serving in the military gives.
“I’m the first in my family to join – my family are communists,” Colwell joked. “I like being a Marine, but I’m not sure if I plan to reenlist, it really depends on my wife.”
Colwell just finished his associate’s degree and plans to get a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. If he stays in, he wants to become an officer, and if he decides to leave the Marines he wants to move back to Georgia and become a detective. Aside from his long term goals, Colwell does have a couple of immediate plans in the Marine Corps.
“I want to win the next NCO of the quarter board and I want to get my instructor tab (for Marine martial arts),” Colwell said. “I’m already a black belt, so I want to be able to teach.”
In his downtime Colwell likes to workout, play chess, football and poker.
“I like anything competitive, I play a lot of poker, online and regular tournaments,” Colwell said. “I also like to watch the Atlanta Falcons. That’s been painful this year so far. I stayed up late to watch us get smoke checked by the Giants, brutal.”
Besides his other hobbies Colwell has recently learned to play golf. He confesses that he’s still learning the fundamentals but that he enjoys the game a lot.
“I’m still trying to perfect the art of not missing the ball when I swing,” Colwell laughed.
When not practicing his golf swing, Colwell likes to go shooting. He took his wife to the range on one outing and she surprised him with her skill.
“She was a damn good shot for a first timer, I couldn’t believe it,” Colwell said. “She likes to shoot the guns.”
“I want to tell my wife that I miss her and I can’t wait to see you babe,” Colwell said.
Nerd Fact: Colwell’s mom dressed him as a princess for Halloween when he was eight. “It’s why I don’t talk to her anymore… for real!” Colwell deadpans. “I was however, the hottest princess ever!”
