The Regimental Combat Team 6 Marine of the day is Gunnery Sgt. Benjamin L. Jones, 34, career planner, from Erie Pa.
Jones joined the Marine Corps in June 1995. He is married and has two daughters and two sons.
Jones joined the Marine Corps a week after he graduated high school. Originally a warehouseman he lateral moved to career planning. Like many Marines, he joined because he wanted a challenge in life.
“I wanted to go into accounting, but my recruiter messed up and he reversed my number one and two choices,” Jones said. “It didn’t matter in the long run, because I got to do some really cool things in the job I had that I might not have done if I’d gone accounting.
As Jones speaks he becomes more animated and his smile widens, it’s clear from his attitude that he loves to help others. This trait is noticed even in his personal life, he coaches youth soccer and basketball teams for all his children.
“It lets me spend more time with my family, I even offered to coach my youngest in cheerleading but she didn’t want that,” Jones laughed. “I love to help others.”
A devoted family man, Jones talks about life at home, he likes to run around the house and play tag and hide-n-go-seek with his kids.
“My wife swears that I’m her fifth kid,” he said. “I love to play with my kids and watch football.”
Displaying the same enthusiasm as he does with everything else in his life, he talks about his favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“Black and yellow, black and yellow, all day everyday, the greatest team in the world,” Jones says as he punches his fists and jumps forward.
Despite his smile and approachable nature Jones is all business when it comes to his job. His intense nature and explosive energy help him in dealing with fellow Marines and planning the best course for their careers.
