The Regimental Combat Team 6 Marine of the day is Gunnery Sgt. Mark Stewart, 34, camp commandant, from Fort Worth, Texas.

Stewart joined the Marine Corps in June 1997.

Stewart originally went to college with a full scholarship to Texas A&M for the sport of shooting. After the school took the money for the shooting team and rolled it into the women’s volleyball program, he went back home and decided to join the Marine Corps.

“Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to join the military. After I lost my scholarship it seemed like a good time to join,” Stewart laughed. “I’ve been here ever since.”

An uncomplicated person, Stewart doesn’t claim many ambitions, but the two that he does have he pursues with a great passion.

“I’ve had two goals since I joined the Marines, pick up gunnery sergeant and earn a distinguished expert rifle badge.”

While he has achieved the first, he is still working on the second. Every weekend, Stewart can be found traveling, watching and participating in pistol and rifle competitions. He practices with all different kinds of weapons and calibers and is sponsored by companies such as STI and Sig Saur.

“If it’s got sights and a trigger I shoot it” Stewart said. “I’ve won roughly 12 rifles in competitions and my sponsors pay my match fees and give me ammo to practice, so it’s a cheap hobby.”

His other hobby besides shooting is golf. He has tried out for the Marine Corps golfing team twice. He is currently an 8 handicap but has been as low as a 1.

According to Stewart, a golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's playing ability based slope, rate, distance and other factors. It is used to help players compete at the same level despite their differences in skill.

Despite his passionate nature, Stewart smiles easily and laughs often as he talks about his life. He knows that he doesn’t do much, and he says that prefers it that way.

“Every weekend I’m either shooting or playing golf,” Stewart said. “My hobbies are inexpensive and easy.”

Nerd Fact: His call sign is the Ghost. “I’m white as a ghost and nobody ever remembers me, I’ve had seven duty stations in less than 15 years, so even by our standards I move around a lot,” Stewart said.
