Army 1st Lt. Matthew B. Wharton, from the 789th Ordnance Company, said some Afghan scrappers come to the improvised explosive device ranges. He said they take scrap metal left over from the detonation to sell in order to support their families. Wharton said he sometimes fears for their safety because the scrappers could be near during an explosion.
