NAVAL SUPPORT FACILITY DEVESELU, Romania (May 22, 2019) – Staff and students from the Marine Corps War College, based in Quantico, Va., met with U.S. Navy Cmdr. Axel Steiner, Commanding Officer of Aegis Ashore Ballistic Missile Defense System in Romania, during their visit to Eastern Europe May 22, 2019. Steiner provided an overview briefing in the “deck house” for the cohort as part of their capstone project in Diplomacy and Statecraft during a 2-week trip to various sties in Europe. This was the first official visit to the Aegis Ashore at the Naval Support Facility Deveselu (NSFD), located about three hours east of the capital city of Bucharest. During their visit, the students learned more about the Aegis Ashore capabilities to better understand how it fits into the U.S. and NATO partnership in Eastern Europe. They toured the Aegis Ashore facility, which became fully operational in 2016, and learned more about the U.S. Navy’s unique mission of Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) and the strategic partnerships between the U.S. Department of Defense and NATO.
