Marine Corps War College Visits Aegis Ashore in Romania

NAVAL SUPPORT FACILITY DEVESELU, Romania (May 22, 2019) – U.S. Navy Cmdr. Axel Steiner, Commanding Officer of Aegis Ashore Ballistic Missile Defense in Romania, greets staff and students from the Marine Corps War College May 22, 2019. The group traveled from Quantico, Va., to Romania as part of their capstone project in Diplomacy and Statecraft and wanted to make a site visit to the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System at the Naval Support Facility Deveselu (NSFD), located about three hours east of the capital city of Bucharest. During their visit, the students learned more about the Aegis Ashore capabilities to better understand how it fits into the U.S. and NATO partnership in Eastern Europe. They toured the Aegis Ashore facility, which became fully operational in 2016, and learned more about the U.S. Navy’s unique mission of Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) and the strategic partnerships between the U.S. Department of Defense and NATO.
