    NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Maj Gen. Mark Berry, Arkansas' adjutant general, returns a salute from Brig. Gen. Kirk Van Pelt after pinning a Legion of Merit medal on Van Pelt's chest during Van Pelt's retirement ceremony here June 8, 2019. Van Pelt was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1985 through the Officer Candidate Program at the Arkansas Regional Training Institute. He commanded an infantry battalion in Baghdad, Iraq, from 2004 to 2005; and garrison command in Taji, Iraq, in 2008. Prior to retiring, he served as the Land Component Commander, Arkansas Army National Guard.
