NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- A drummer in the 106th Army Band plays a drum roll at the end of the retirement ceremony of Brig. Gen Kirk Van Pelt who retired from the Arkansas National Guard in a ceremony here June 8, 2019. Van Pelt was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1985 through the Officer Candidate Program at the Arkansas Regional Training Institute. He commanded an infantry battalion in Baghdad, Iraq, from 2004 to 2005; and garrison command in Taji, Iraq, in 2008. Prior to retiring, he served as the Land Component Commander, Arkansas Army National Guard.
