Sgt. Jonathan P. Coupal, 962nd Ordnance Company, uses his compass to orient himself during the day land navigation event, one of 12 challenges faced by competitors at the 316th Expeditionary Sustainment Command 2012 Best Warrior competition, at Fort Dix, N.J. Coupal, who placed as runner-up for the non-commissioned officers “Best Warrior” title, emphasized the power of a positive attitude. “Don’t go in it thinking, ‘OK, that guy is going to do better than me [and] that guy is going to do better than me,’ because, at that point, you’ve probably already lost,” he said. “Go in it thinking, ‘Alright, I’m going to do the best I can at every event and regardless of what happens, I’m going to be happy because I know I put forth all the effort I could into it.” This year, the “Soldier of the Year” victory went to Spc. Christopher P. Fitt, 439th Quartermaster Company. Staff Sgt. John W. Schillereff, 38th Regional Support Group, won “Best Warrior” title for the non-commissioned officers. The two winners advance to the 377th Theater Sustainment Command Best Warrior competition.
