SAN DIEGO (July 16, 2019) Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) 3rd Class Andrew Rodriguez, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), assists in securing mattresses to the wing of an aircraft during a crash and salvage drill. Crash and salvage drills teach Sailors how to recover and secure an aircraft in the event of an actual casualty. Makin Island, homeported in San Diego, is conducting a depot-level maintenance availability. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Ethan Jaymes Morrow)
