Soldiers assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, stand in formation along Manhart Field following an honor rally for Dan and Michelle Benavidez, April 13, 2012. The Benavidez family requested to begin a 1,080-mile march from Fort Carson in honor of their son, Staff Sgt. Kenneth Mayne, and to raise awareness of the service and sacrifice of military families. More than 2,000 Fort Carson Soldiers attended a rally to show their support to the Benavidez family, whose son, Mayne, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division soldier, was killed in 2008 during a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Benavidez family began the ceremonial first mile of their 1,080-mile walk from Fort Carson's Manhart Field, and plan to conclude their march at the Middle East Conflicts Memorial Wall in Marseilles, Ill., where their son's name is etched in stone.
