Spc. Matt Spradley, infantryman assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, walks the ceremonial first mile of 1,080-mile march in honor of Staff Sgt. Kenneth Mayne, April 13, 2012. Spradley joined Mayne's parents, Dan and Michelle Benavidez, as they paid tribute to the memory of their son, Staff Sgt. Kenneth Mayne, who was killed in 2008 during a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Benavidez family is leading a 1,080-mile march to raise awareness of the service and sacrifice of military families. The walk began at Fort Carson's Manhart Field and is scheduled to finish at the Middle East Conflicts Memorial Wall in Marseilles, Ill., where their son's name is etched in stone. "This walk means a lot to me personally, because I couldn't do what I do, if it wasn't for the people like Staff Sgt. Mayne and others like him."
