Harry K. Thomas Jr., U.S. ambassador to the Philippines, throws out his planned speech after listening to the military leaders from the Philippines and the U.S. speak of mutual respect, admiration and gratitude for each other during his remarks at the closing ceremony of Balikatan 2012, April 27, at Camp Aguinaldo, Philippines. Exercise Balikatan is an annual training event aimed at improving combined planning, combat readiness, humanitarian assistance and interoperability between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. The word "balikatan" in Filipino means "shoulder-to-shoulder."
