Sgt. Maj. Octaviano Gallegos, sergeant major of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, speaks to the participants of the Warrior of the Month event in the hangar bay of the USS Iwo Jima, May 1, 2012. Lance corporals and below with the Command Element, 24th MEU, competed in four events - physical fitness, drill, uniform inspection, and a formal question and answer board -to be selected as the Warrior for the Month. The competition is conducted by corporals and will be held every month while deployed. At the end of the deployment each Warrior of the Month winner will then compete for the title dubbed Warrior of the Deployment. The unit is deployed with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group serving as a theater reserve force providing support for maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.
