Col. Frank Donovan, commanding officer, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, awards Lance Cpl. James Cruse, a native of Sulligent, Ala., as the Warrior of the Month, May 1, 2012. Cruse won the event after competing with fellow junior Marines in a four-hour event that tested them in physical fitness, drill, uniform inspection, and a formal question and answer board. The competition is conducted by corporals and will be held every month while deployed. At the end of the deployment each Warrior of the Month winner will then compete for the title dubbed Warrior of the Deployment. The unit is deployed with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group serving as a theater reserve force providing support for maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts.
