LEMOORE, Calif. (September 17, 2019) During the Gulf of Tonkin Commemoration Event honorees from the left, Commander Ronald V. Boch, U.S. Navy (RET), Commander Everett Alvarez Jr., and U.S. Navy (RET) and John L. Nicholson Jr., U.S. Navy (RET), visit the F4 Phantom Memorial at NAS Lemoore. The memorial honors the men and women of Naval Aviation past who gave their lives defending freedom and democracy around the world. The Gulf of Tonkin Commemoration Event honored the Naval Aviators who served with courage and dignity during the Vietnam War, specifically Commander Everett Alvarez Jr., who became the first American aviator shot down over Vietnam and became the 2nd longest-held prisoner of war in North Vietnam, eight-and-a-half years, during the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.
