NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Sept. 23, 2019) The water level beneath the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) rises to 28 feet in the ship’s dry dock as Newport News Shipyard (NNS) shipbuilders flood the dry dock in preparation for undocking to a nearby waterside pier. George Washington is undergoing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at NNS. RCOH is a nearly four-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling of the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades and modernization.
