NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Sept. 23, 2019) Capt. Kenneth Strong (second from right), commanding officer aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), and Capt. Daryle Cardone (right), executive officer aboard George Washington, along with George Washington Sailors and Huntington Ingalls Industries Newport News Shipbuilding workers, pose for a group photo during the flooding of the dry dock. Flooding the dry dock is conducted in preparation for the ship to undock and moor to a nearby waterside pier. George Washington is undergoing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipyard. RCOH is a nearly four-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling of the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades and modernization.
