NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Sept. 23, 2019) Capt. Kenneth Strong, commanding officer of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier George Washington (CVN 73), observes dry dock flooding. Flooding the dry dock is conducted in preparation for the ship to undock and moor to a nearby waterside pier. George Washington is undergoing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipyard. RCOH is a nearly four-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling of the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades and modernization.
